Rhett had a restricted time to play, so he went on early, a thoughtful move that reveals his kindness. He proceeded to rock this venue, with great songs from the new record Blame it on Gravity, due to be released next month, and favorites from his solo and Old 97's past. He told us that he had flown in from LA that day, and if this is what jet-lag does to his performing skills, we can only wish for more cross country gigs. He was loose and wonderful (as always), drinking whiskey and joking with the crowd. One of his encore songs was "America the Beautiful" but with the words he had written for his wife, Erica, prior to their marriage. "Oh Erica ..." he sang wryly as she watched from the audience. The amazing thing about Rhett is that he does a grand job on Old 97's tunes despite the absence of his excellent and equally talented bandmates. He fills a room with but one guitar and a wild, but friendly, spirit. Rhett's frenetic version of "American Girl" by Tom Petty was alone worth the price of admission.

What a performance by Rhett. Fantastic! He is amazing on stage and a very nice person and friendly off stage.

No matter how many times we see Rhett perform, he never lets us down! My group of 13 family and friends were mesmerized as usual. I warned everyone that he would likely break a heavy sweat and a guitar string and he didn't let us down. My favorites of the night "Doreen", "Fireflies", "Barrier Reef", "Singular Girl", "Roller Skate Skinny" and "Time Bomb". Rhett is the bomb and even hung around for a meet and greet after the show. I hope my husband didn't scare him with the offer of spahetti and meatballs. We are really not rocker stalkers! Just love him and all his talent.

Everytime I see Rhett/Old 97's I have the time of my life! What a fantastic performer and personable being! Love the lyrics to the songs and the energy of every show! Best acoustic show I have ever seen! Thanks for the entertainment, Rhett! Can't wait until the next CD is out and you and the 97s tour again!

Someone at the gym turned me on to Rhett Miller. Knew nothing about him but really dug working out to the Believer and Instigator. When Unexpectedly, I saw tickets for a show at the Troubadour in West Hollywood - about 50 miles from where I live - and I snagged them on a lark. The troubadour has more music history and served as the launching ground for more great performers than almost anywhere. It was in this holy temple of live performances that Rhett walked out to a bare stage with nothing but a naked microphone, a guitar, and a smile and two hours to fill. I was pretty apprehensive in the way that people are when they're nervous for the performer... nervous that he could carry the place without a band or at least a synthesizer or a talking parrot to back him up. But there he was, and then there he exploded into two non-stop hours of the best performance I've seen in twenty years. It's a given that you dig his music and lyrics and articulated delivery. But it was his energy, his guitar work and (most mood setting of all) the obvious joy he got from performing that rocked the crowd that night at the Troubadour. The two hours went by like ten New York minutes and I'll tell you we were not ready to see him leave - wouldn't LET him leave, and Rhett in his gracious way repaid us with more than a few encores. Rhett, come back out to Southern California my man! This time try the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano or someplace intimate like that and let us Orange County Miller fans sell out your concerts!!

Rhett and the Believers went on stage around 8, and they played up until about 10, which for the type of outdoor show it was is a considerably large set. The opened with "My Valentine" which is a million times better live than on the CD, I think. Maybe its the Believers, they add so much to the show, everybody plays like its the only thing they would want to be doing, and some bands just don't do that anymore. Angela is a great drummer, she really brings it. My sister Becca said she got a kick out of her facial expressions, I did too. I talked to her for a bit before the show, and a minute afterward, she was really nice. Talked to Tommy and Greg too, and they both were a lot more friendly than I would have thought. I only said hi to them briefly in Atlanta, so it was nice to talk to them a bit. Anyway, after "My Valentine" they did a couple 97's songs, and while it is weird to see another band do the 97's songs, they really do a hell of a job with them. Some of the arrangements are different, and they do "19", which is a song I think lacks the respect it deserves, though it may be an age bias. Heh. When the got to "Brand New Way" before the song Rhett said, "This next song is for a friend of mine here who is learning to play guitar, and this song is not easy, so Sarah, this is for you" and they played the song. I couldn't believe he did that... and I felt a little bit embarrassed, because I didn't really do the song justice when I covered it, or the one time I did it live. They did great though. Another cool thing was "Question" full band style! The arrangement was really great. After they finished off the main set with "Barrier Reef", which, Tommy started in the wrong key and when the band came in, he fixed the mistake quickly, but thats a tricky spot, and theres not a guitar player who hasn't started 3 more frets up than they were supposed to. After the finished, Rhett came out with his acoustic (this wasn't on the set) and played "Wish the Worst", "W-I-F-E", and "Melt Show". I was surprised he did "W-I-F-E" because I have never heard that one live! It was really great. After that the band came back and did their encore. The only thing they didn't play that I wanted to hear was "Delicate", thats the only song off the Believer I haven't heard yet. After they were done (they did a really fast version of "Our Love"), Becca and I went and found Mom, who was about to pass out, and then I went over to where Tommy and Greg were and asked if they would tell Rhett that Mom was about to pass out and she wanted to say bye, and Rhett came out and told us bye and told a couple funny stories. He gave everybody hugs and we said bye to the Believers and were on our way home. The whole setlist is: My Valentine Rollerskate Skinny The El Lonely Holiday Meteor Shower Fireflies (Angela sang the girl part, and it was so pretty!) This is What I Do 19 Aint that Strange Question Buick City Complex Brand New Way Things that Disappear Help Me Suzanne Come Around Four Eyed Girl Barrier Reef Wish the Worst Melt Show W-I-F-E King of All the World Singular Girl Our Love.
