As the 97’s celebrate the 15th anniversary of the release of Too Far To Care, I will take the opportunity to dig into my addled memory for some stories and insights. I’ll start with a track-by-track retrospective of the album’s thirteen songs. I will address them in reverse order, finishing appropriately with “Timebomb”.

Track 01 – “Timebomb”

“Timebomb” is a simple song. A boy obsessed with a young girl screams her name over and over again. Isn’t that the essence of rock and roll? He is dangerous, on the wrong side of the law, and maintaining a precarious balance between love and mania. What do we know about her? Well, her name is Celeste, she’s “stick-legged,” and apparently possessed of a comeliness powerful enough to drive at least one man to the brink of madness.

My own Pavlovian response to the song is, perhaps, unique to members of the Old 97’s. “Timebomb” is the last song of the night, every night. So when I hear Ken’s classic opening guitar lick, I swell with pride at having successfully navigated another night of rock and roll insanity. By that time I have usually climbed up onto the drum riser or, sometimes, onto the top of my guitar amp perched atop the drum riser way up high in the air. And during those airborne milliseconds as I descend toward the stage to sing the night’s closing number, I thank providence for this life I am blessed to lead. I was made for this mournful wail. To scream “Celeste” at the top of my lungs is my glorious destiny and my unlikely privilege.
